These photos were taken by an educator working in Ghana, Africa who is educating community volunteers/ medical personal as well as assisting with screening of neglected tropical skin diseases like leprosy, yaws, and this- Buruli ulcer.
This is a super rare infection caused by a mycobacterium. This is an extra strong type of bacteria that is in the same family as leprosy and TB. It is unknown how this bacteria is transmitted, but it causes horrible ulcerations through the thickness of the skin and can sometimes can go into the bone. This patient’s legs are actually healed from the initial infection that was over 10 years ago! Poor nutrition and healthcare have contributed to poor healing.
